SEO has become a serious title especially that it is now getting harder and harder to get  number 1 position for websites in search engines such as Google, Yahoo or MSN. Type in a phrase like "make money online" into Google and you'll have results of millions of pages!! "Internet Marketing" returns more than 300 million results and "Make Money" over 300 million results.

How do you as a webmaster compete with all of these sites and get your own site on  the first page in Google and other search engines?!

With that majority of searchers not looking beyond the first 3 pages of results, you can't be satisfied unless with at least the top 30 positions. 

There are three key things  that are very important to get top ranking on search engines. These are:

1. Choosing  the right keywords phrase.
2. Optimizing your site correctly for your chooses keyword phrase.
3. Building up as many high quality backlinks as possible.

Choosing the right keyword phrase is extremely important and if you do not put your keyword phrases together and only leave your site without a thought, you will most likely fail.

The best tool you can easily use for keyword research is Wordtracker and at only a few dollars for a day's keyword research, that is worth a great investment. Your goal is to find a keyword phrase that suit your site and has a good  number of searches per day, but is not too competitive. You can read more about Keyword Research before moving ahead.

When you choose your best keyword phrases, the next step is to optimize your  homepage or your web pages (sub-pages) for the chosen phrase. As far as you have abit of HTML knowledge which is very easy to gain, here are few hints:

• Ensure that the Title tag on your page contains your keywords. This is one of the most important parts. Don't stuff this tag with lots of keywords - concentrate on one or two important keyword phrases.
• List your keywords inside the meta tags. Most search engines no longer use meta tags, but some make use of them so it is still worthwhile using these.
• Ensure that the first occurrence of readable text on your page contains your keywords
• Ensure that your keywords are mentioned in the initial paragraph of your page
• Use your keywords throughout the text of your page - but be careful not to overdo this. Your page should still be readable by humans!
• Use your keywords between the headline tags on your page (H1 tags an H2/H3 tags)
• Occasionally bold or italicise your keywords
• Make sure that links pointing back to each page on your site contain the keywords for each page in the anchor text/
• Give all your images an "ALT" tag and put your keywords in here too - again, don't overdo this
• Add some of your keywords in your outbound links

Finally, and most importantly, once you have your website optimized you need to focus on building up as many high quality links to your site as you can. Do this gradually & steadily and by using techniques methods such as Writing Articles,  Directories Submission  and Reciprocal links. You may also try blogging, writing press releases and posting in forums that allow a signature.

To get your site on the top page of Google, Yahoo & Msn is not something that can be done in matter of short time. This process may take weeks, months or even years. This of course depends on how competitive your keywords are. so you should watch your achievements regularly and compare your site to your competitors` websites. Check what's your page rank and compare it to others. check how many backlinks your competitors have? And check whats their keyword density?
